* As the male wanderer of C.L. Moore's short story "Greater Glories" steps out of the jungle, a genderless, formless voice tells him, "There has never been a perfect world" (119). It continues, telling the wanderer and the 1935 pulp magazine audience, that the only hope for the imperfect world is a radical redirection of humankind's efforts, especially their scientific pursuits. Building on fifty years of women's Utopian fictions, C.L. Moore and her contemporaries in the 1930s investigate and transform the possibility of science producing a "perfect world." In this essay, I explore a corner of that history that has received little attention thus far: women's science fiction stories published in the sf pulps of the 1930s. I have chosen to focus on stories that employ a dystopian narrative because they engage with anxieties specific to women's lives in America at the time. Both the Utopian and dystopian' stories written by women in the pulp magazines are "rooted in the needs and wants of specific classes, groups, and individuals in their unique historical contexts" (Moylan 2). In this study, I examine the "unique historical context" of women in the American 1930s and the way women science fiction writers express and critique their historical and cultural situation through the dystopian imagination (2).
